MARGAO: Upset over Goa Dairy mismanagement, the Minister for Agriculture and Animal Husbandry and  Veterinary Services Ramesh Tawadkar  on Thursday  hinted that the government would intervene in the functioning of the Dairy to restore the confidence of Goa Dairy farmers.

Speaking to the media on the sidelines of a press conference in Margao, the minister said that there are  growing complaints about the mismanagement of Goa Dairy.

“We do not want to  interfere in it, because it is a private body… successive government always supported the  Goa Dairy because it is  Goan farmers dairy. But despite providing them financial and infrastructural support, if it can’t grow then it is time for the government to intervene,’’ he said.

The minister, citing few alleged irregularities of the board of directors including creation of unwanted jobs, thereby incurring huge financial losses, said that the dairy farmers should not suffer in the bargain.

“We, therefore, have promoted the SUMUL dairy in Goa.  Initially, SUMUL will try out in four of the 11 talukas of the state. This is being done only to give a choice to the dairy farmers,’’ the minister said, replying to media queries. On the decision of Goa Dairy to approach the court, the minister said that the decision will only expose their failures.

The minister alleged that the Goa Dairy and the societies are responsible for the present state of the dairy. He said that for the benefit of the dairy farmers, each society will be provided  fat calculating machines.
