TAG to remember tiatr artistes of yesteryears on August 28

Every month Tiatr Academy of Goa organises a special programme, ‘Somplolea Tiatristancho Ugddas’ to remember late tiatr artistes who were born in a particular month and are no more with us today, highlighting their contribution in the field of tiatr. The artistes born in the month of August and are not living, who will be remembered are:-

Saib Rocha

His presence on Konkani tiatr-scene was an important milestone in the unsteady history of this Goan entertainment form. In fact, Saib Rocha’s coming into Konkani tiatrs at that particular time was a big boost to the not so happy situation the tiatr was in.

C Alvares

C Alvares can rightly be called a ‘legend’ as no artiste has contributed as much as he has done to the Konkani stage; in terms of volume of work, number of years on the Konkani stage as an actor, singer, writer/director, etc. He was known as ‘King of Duets’.

Minguel Rod

Minguel Rod was a phenomenon on stage. Although he did not have much formal education, he was a born a genius for the tiatr stage, be in writing and directing tiatrs, composing songs, acting and singing. It is unbelievable to justify the 32 tiatrs (master-pieces) he penned more than 300 songs (again all master-pieces) which he composed and sang during his very short life span. But it is a fact.

Alfred Rose

Alfred Rose was a talented singer of the Konkani stage who was known as ‘Melody King’ and can undisputedly be ranked as one of the greatest singer and composer that Konkani stage has ever seen. He has produced several albums and even published books of songs.

Felicio
Cardozo

Felicio Cardozo was a journalist, a teacher and a freedom fighter. He was responsible for writing many Konkani tiatrs and encouraging new talent on the Konkani stage. Young tiatrists who began their career in tiatrs of Felicio Cardozo have risen to become leading tiatrists today.

Francisco Antonio Fernandes

Born on August 9, 1944, Francisco Antonio Fernandes was a musician par excellence. His contribution to the field of tiatr music is worth mentioning. He started playing ‘drums’ at the age of 15 in Alex Mestri’s band. He worked with great stalwarts of khell-tiatr like Anton Moraes, Patrick Dourado, etc.

Rosary Ferns

Ferns was a versatile actor-director who worked for the development of tiatr in Goa and also in Gulf countries. He has composed several songs and produced many albums. He died at a very young age.

Mateus Pereira

The state government had conferred upon him the Kala Gaurav Puraskar for his contribution in the field of Tiatr in the year 2010-11. Hailing from Curchorem, Mateus Antonio Pereira, popularly known as Mathew Perry was a versatile actor, singer and writer on Konkani stage. His song ‘Xetkamti’ is very popular and is still remembered today.

Nicolau Xavier Fernandes
(NX)

Born on August 25, 1937, NX Fernandes was a talented actor, director and singer of the Konkani stage. ‘Konn Zait To?’, ‘Bhav-Bhav’, ‘Bailek Lagon’, ‘Upkari’ ‘Mhaka Favo Aslem’ are few of his popular tiatrs. He has also contributed to khell-tiatr. He passed away on February 8, 2012.

Shalini Mardolkar

A very talented actress and a singer, Shalini believed in perfection and excelled in her roles in tiatrs as well as movies. She won the hearts of people with the role of ‘Claudia’ in the famous Konkani movie ‘Nirmonn’.

Caetano
Inacio Goes

A much respected tiatr artiste, Caetano had performed and staged his shows in Goa, Mumbai and Karachi in Pakistan. ‘Rogot Bhavponnachem’, ‘Nimnnem Kumsar’, ‘Ghatki Ostori’, ‘Kiteak Upkarlem?’ and ‘Carmichem Bentin’ are some of the popular tiatrs written and directed by him.

Domingos Joao
Fernandes

A very good actor from Bicholim, Domingos was born on August 4, 1959 and died on January 10, 2017.

Jose Agostinho Fernandes
(A Friend)

Jose Agostinho Fernandes popularly known as a friend in the tiatr fraternity was an excellent composer and singer was born on August 23, 1967 at Sancoale. He performed in non-stop shows and tiatrs of topmost directors of the tiatr stage. He composed and sung more than 50 odd songs in professional tiatrs, besides singing in VCD films. One of his hit songs was ‘Sovai Rupiya’ in Menino de Bandar’s tiatr ‘Dha Lakh’. He died on February 8, 2017.

Francisco Xavier Baretto

Francisco Xavier Baretto, popularly known as F X Barreto on the tiatr stage hailed from Cortalim. He was an acclaimed singer. He acted in tiatrs of veteran tiatr artistes namely John Claro Fernandes, late Rosario Rodrigues, John D’Silva, Pascoal Rodrigues and others. He died on November 24, 2017.
