Sumiran, Sagun hit fifties as Goa make solid start against J&K

PORVORIM: Riding on fine half-centuries by opener Sumiran Amonkar (unbeaten 69) and skipper Sagun Kamat (57), hosts Goa made a strong start against Jammu and Kashmir in their Elite Group C Ranji Trophy match, reaching 216 for 2 at the close of first day’s play at GCA Academy ground in Porvorim, on Monday.

Goa made a sedate start to their innings after J&K captain Parvez Rasool won the toss and chose to bowl first. Openers Sumiran Amonkar and Amogh Desai put on 76-run partnership for the first wicket in 47.1 overs when former India all-rounder Irfan Pathan dismissed the latter for 43. Amogh hit 4 fours in his 124-ball innings. Captain Sagun Kamat then joined Sumiran and the duo took the total to 165 before the former departed after making a strokeful 57. J&K’s Umar Nazir removed Sagun — caught by substitute O Haroon — afer the southpaw had hit 7 fours and a six in his 86-ball knock.

Meanwhile, opener Sumiran continued playing his usual self and began ticking the scoreboard in the company of No 4 batsman Amit Verma.

At the close of day’s play, Sumiran was batting on 69 for which he has consumed 286 balls. His patient unbeaten knock contained 9 fours and a six. Amit Verma, his partner at the other end, was batting on 37 and has hit 7 fours in his 44-ball knock.

For Jammu & Kashmir, veteran Irfan Pathan returned figures of 1 for 30 in 13 overs while Umar Nazir was the other bowler to have tasted some success claiming 1 for 46 in 20 overs. Captain Parvez Rasool went wicketless in his 19 overs conceding 33 runs.
