State mahila Cong demands ticket for Pratima Coutinho

The State Mahila Congress Committee, on Saturday, demanded with the party high command South Goa Lok Sabha ticket for Pratima Coutinho.

According to the panel, Coutinho has a better contacts with the people than  Francis Sardinha, who is also in the race for the ticket. Speaking to media persons in Margao, members of the committee said that it is the duty of the high command to stand by its words of giving representation to  a woman.

“Rahul Gandhi has always talked of 33 per cent reservation for women, and now they should stick to their words. Pratima has to be given the Lok Sabha ticket for South Goa because she has worked at the grassroots-level for the past 23 years, and taken part in 87 agitations for the people. Since BJP and AAP have already declared their male candidates, Congress should give its South Goa ticket to Pratima,” said the committee’s social media co-ordinator Roshini D’Silva.

D’Silva added that while Sardinha is respected as a leader, he is not in the political arena for the past five years.

“Sardinha sir has definitely served us by being MP, and we have respect for him. But, how many times have you seen him on the streets in the last five years? He should also express his support for Pratima,” she said.

Though hesitant to comment on whether they would turn against their party if the ticket is not given to Coutinho,  the women Congress committee members said that they do not want to think negatively, and added that they too are confident of the ticket being given to the candidate of their choice.

A committee member Diana Braganza meanwhile explained why Pratima is the ideal candidate.

“She has worked at the grassroots-level starting from booth level to block level, youth president and for the past two years as mahila Congress president. All the people in Goa know who Pratima is, and the work she has done. She is well known in South Goa as well, as a councillor, deputy chairperson and chairperson. She is well known for helping para-teachers, staging protests against price rise and others,” she said.
