Department of biotechnology, St Xavier’s College, Mapusa organised a two-day national seminar on ‘Advances in Sustainable Biotechnology’. Topics covered included sustainable energy, genetic engineering, environment protection, sustainable agriculture, biotechnology in the cryosphere and entrepreneurship.
Chief guest for the seminar was professor and head of department, biotechnology, Goa University, Savita Kerkar who spoke about frontiers in modern biotechnology. Resource persons were assistant professor, MES Abasaheb Garware College, Pune, Prafulla Shede; professor, department of microbiology, Goa University, Santosh Kumar Dubey; director, Vision Ecologica Private Limited, Pune, Ashish Polkade; professor, department of botany, Goa University, S Krishnan and scientist E, National Centre for Antarctic and Ocean Research, Vasco, Shiv Mohan Singh. Chief guest for the valedictory function was principal scientist and director, Indian Council of Agricultural Research, Goa, E B Chakurkar who delivered a session on Advances in Animal Biotechnology. Besides the plenary sessions there were a total of 35 posters on sustainable biotechnology presented by research scholars and students from various institutes.
