MARGAO: The legendary Portuguese footballer Luis Figo will talk about how youth football should be developed, besides playing a friendly football match that will be held between Goa XI and India XI, Mr Pratik Gandhi, the senior marketing manager of Red9 Events Pvt Ltd has disclosed.
Speaking to ‘The Navhind Times’ at the Nehru stadium here, Mr Gandhi said all the arrangements have been made for hosting the famed midfielder, who had stints with some of the world’s great football clubs like Real Madrid, Barcelona and Inter Milan. The former Portugal captain will reach Goa on November 1.
Figo is the brand ambassador for ‘Youth Champions League’, a school football festival, which was inaugurated at the stadium Monday evening. The highlight of the five-day festival will be an exhibition match in which the Portuguese winger will lead Goa XI against India XI captained by Churchill Brothers’ Brazilian midfielder Roberto Mendes Silva at Nehru Stadium on November 1.
Silva was present for the inauguration of the festival and said he was eager to meet the Portuguese legend.
“It’s a great honour to play alongside a celebrated world player like Luis Figo. I am looking forward to meeting him,” the Churchill playmaker said. “Figo has achieved so much in football. It is a great opportunity for Indians and Goans in particular to watch this great footballer play on the Goan soil.”
Silva said he was always a great fan of Figo and wished that the visits of such great players happen more often so that India gains and learns more in football which will help to improve the standard of football in the country. “It’s going to be a great atmosphere at Nehru stadium when Figo lands his feet on this ground,” Silva said.
Silva revealed that five of his club mates—Lenny Rodrigues, Denzil Franco, Stephen Dias, Ravanan D and Alesh Sawant—will join him in the India XI.
