MARGAO: An 89th minute goal by striker Aliston Fernandes helped Wilred Leisure SC score a solitary-goal victory against NRB Vasco and collect full points in the GFA Professional Football League match played at Raia panchayat grounds on Tuesday.
The all-important goal scored by Aliston, who came as a substitute in the second session, bore the stamp of a class as his dipping 30 yarder gave no chance at all to the Vasco keeper Agnelo Noronha.
With this win Wilred Leisure have collected 11 points and are expected to do much better in the future games of the league.
The match began on a slow pace with Wilred Leisure controlling most of the proceedings as they make NRB Vasco sweat it out throughout the proceedings to contain their fast moving forwards.
Wilred Leisure could have surely been at least two goals up in the second session had Sertorio Monteiro’s efforts been a little more accurate. He took good shots which missed the mark narrowly.
Both the teams depended on short passes in which Wilred Leisure excelled with more ball possession and attempts at the rival goal, Sertorio Monteiro threatened the Vasco goal time and often along with Melwyn Fernandes, who was later replaced with Aliston Fernandes. It was this substitution that changed the complexion of Wilred Leisure team as the attack became more pronounced and finally found the mark when the match was a minute away from the final whistle.
Collecting a lose ball almost near the halfway line on the right flank, Aliston Fernandes took few steps forward and then unleashed a powerful left footer that dazed the NRB Vasco keeper Agnelo Noronha.
Vasco depended on counter attacks which were far and between and although Stepehn and Emanuel had a couple of chances after combining well, they shot wide off the target on three clear occasions.
