MARGAO: In a well contested match NRB Vasco SC came from behind to hold Santa Cruz Club of Cavelossim 2-2 in a GFA Professional League match played at Nehru stadium, here on Monday.
The teams were level at 1-1 at half-time as Cavelossim went into the lead in the 14th minute through Agnelo D’Souza while Vasco restored parity in the 35th minute through their in-form striker Agnelo Colaco.
In the second session, Cavelossim lads were in the front again as substitute Monday Ugboji scored a gem of a goal in the 56th minute but Vasco fought valiantly to equalise for the second time in the 83rd minute through a powerful header by substitute Aniket Jadav.
Cavelossim had much of the say in the proceedings in the first session as they came hard at Vasco staying in the attacking mode and they could have been at least two goals up. On the other hand, Vasco were a completely transformed team in the second session and dominated the proceedings with swift passes and possession play. Had their strikers been on target, Vasco could have carried the day in the second session.
In the first session, Cavelossim’s Agnelo hit the horizontal bar as he unleashed a power-packed effort. The other noteworthy chance that the young team had was in the 44th minute when Tunard Fernandes had the rival keeper at his mercy, but to the chagrin of all, shot the ball over the bar from close.
Cavelossim began well with fast moves all the while and put Vasco’s defence in disarray. They moved the ball well on both the flanks with some nice passes on display and Vasco were seen defending most of the time. As Cavelossim were at the peak of attacking mode, they scored through Agnelo, who beat the Vasco keeper Agnelo Noronha off a beautiful pass from Perryson Rebello for their opener.
Cavelossim than pressed hard for most part of the first session but conceded the equaliser through a penalty. Vasco striker Felix Odili was brought down by defender Julius Akpele in the box and referee Franky Fernandes pointed to the penalty spot,
from where striker Agnelo Colaco shot in without any difficulty.
Vasco dominated the second session with aggressive play while Cavelossim threatened on counter moves which were few and far between. Cavelossim, however, were on top in the initial period of play and went ahead within 11 minutes of the start of the second half. Perryson again turned the provider as he moved down the right flank and sent a
perfect cross to substitute Monday, who shot in the nets.
Thereafter, Vasco came back very strongly and were in the offensive for most part of the second session. They had at least three opportunities to restore parity but their strikers muffed easy chances.
Finally in the 83rd minute, Vasco struck gold through substitute striker Aniket Jadav headed past keeper Johnson Fernandes after Agnelo sent a cross from the right.
