MARGAO: Playing with strong determination and verve, Sporting Clube de Goa Sunday registered a shocking 2-0 win over strong contenders Churchill Brothers in the GFA’s Kingfisher Professional League match at Nehru Stadium, Fatorda.
Both the goals came in the second session of play. Though both the teams played almost on equal footing but what went in favour of Sporting was the ability of their strikers Victorino Fernandes and Rowlin Borges who scored in the 65th and 89th minute of play respectively.
The first half was evenly balanced with both the teams having a chance each to score. While it was Victorino Fernandes who missed an easy sitter for Sporting; it was striker Henry Arnaud who repeated the same story for Churchill Brothers.
With this win, Sporting have collected 6 points from five matches while Churchill Brothers are on seven points from four outings.
Churchill surely missed the services of their key players Bilal Najjari and Akram Mograbi who have flown to their home country to participate in the World Cup qualifiers. Besides, they also missed playmaker Roberto Mendes (Beto) who did not feature in the line-up for Sunday’s match.
Nonetheless, Churchill did sparkle as did the Sporting and as the proceedings progressed it appeared that the teams were heading for a draw.
However after some initial misses by both the teams, what really went in favour of Sporting was their ability to score and the credit should go to their strikers Victorino Fernandes and Rowlin Borges who gave no chance whatsoever to Churchill Brothers goalkeeper Felix D’Souza.
Receiving a nice pass from the right, Victorino Fernandes sent in a stinging shot that beat goalkeeper Felix D’Souza. And even though Churchill Brothers made a gallant effort to restore parity, it was Sporting who had the last laugh as few seconds before the final hooter Rowlin Borges unleashed a powerful grounder off a neat pass from substitute Stephen Barretto to seal the match 2-0.
