MAPUSA: Sao Minguel Taleigao received a stiff challenge from strong contenders Calangute Association to register a 6-5 win via the tie-breaker, to enter the finals of 3rd Colormax-Imperial Rolling trophy at Dr Gustavo Monteiro stadium, Candolim grounds here on Wednesday.
Both the sides started on a bright note. In the 12th minute, Pedro Gonsalves beautifully set up Bruno Coutinho right inside the 18-yard box, but the latter shot wide, for Calangute.
Francis Fernandes then missed two open sitters for Calangute, after Cedric Peixoto missed to connect Velancio Estrocio’s cross for Taleigao. Finally, in the 25th minute Taleigao’s Caetano Pinho, drilled a 30-yard scorching drive into the goal to break the deadlock.
It did not take a minute for Calangute to find the equaliser, which they got from their nippy striker Vijay Parsekar who intercepted the ball from a defensive lapse by Anthony Pereira and Ramesh Palkar, to make it 1-1.
In the tie-breaker, Anthony Pereira, Caetano Pinho, Valencio Estrocio, Ramesh Palkar and Cedric Peixoto shot on target for Taleigao while Emmanuel D’Costa, Francis Fernandes, Menino Fernandes and Blake Haldankar scored for Calangute. Pedro Gonsalves’ attempt was saved by keeper Francis Fernandes.
