MAPUSA: Saligao United Sports Club squeezed past Sangolda Lightning with a narrow 2-1 win to advance into the quarters of the Sai Aavtar Super Soccer Cup, organised by Sai Avatar Sports Club at Anjuna Gymkhana grounds, Tembi Monday.
Trevor Dias left Sangolda keeper Devraj Tari rooted to the ground with a direct free-kick in the fourth minute, 1-0. If not for the squandered opportunities by Martin Fernandes and Pravin Jadhav, Saligao would have gone into the breather with a bigger margin. Amit Karande’s goal from a goal mouth melee, 10 minutes from changing ends, helped Saligao consolidate their lead. Hard working Shadab Shaikh managed to pull a goal back for Sangolda with a couple of minutes left for the final whistle.
