VASCO: Saligao United Sports Club, Bardez trounced holder United Club of Nerul 4-2 via tie-breaker to set a date with Nagoa Sporting Club in the finals of the NRB Group 37th Bandodkar Memorial soccer tournament organised by Baina Sports Club and played at MPT grounds here.

Wednesday’s second semi-final saw no goal being scored in the regulation time, hence tie-breaker was resorted to.

In the tie-breaker M A Francis, Trevor Dias, Nestor Dias and Martinho Fernandes scored for Saligao. However for United Club of Nerul, only Agnelo Lobo and Newton Pereira could convert their chances with Saligao goalkeeper Dietman Fernandes brilliantly saving the attempts from Benit D’Souza and Avinash Pereira. Dietman Fernandes was later declared man-of-the-match for his stupendous performance.

Earlier both the teams struggled to go in to the lead on the water logged MPT Ground.

During the first half Nerul’s Hasan Naik, Newton Pereira and Syden Monteiro raided Saligao area but their moves were thwarted by the able defence led by Saligao’s Cleton Rodrigues, Mahesh Rane and Trevor Dias.

After change of ends, Xavier Clemente’s solo effort was beautifully saved by diving Dietman Fernandes of Saligao. Midway in the second half Trevor Dias of Saligao had all the time in the world to shoot in the unguarded goal of Nerul, as goalkeeper Siddesh Morje fell down and lost control, but Trevor instead of just towing in blasted over. The finals will be played June 27.
