MARGAO: The demolition work, as part of refurbishment of Nehru Stadium, Fatorda, which will host the Lusofonia Games in November 2013, has already begun.
Some of the engineering staff of M Venkatrao Infrastructure Projects who are assigned the task of demolition had already started their work on Monday morning.
The architectural staff present at the stadium told The Navhind Times that the work on the ‘upgradation’ and ‘refurbishment’ of the stadium began on November 1 and that it will be completed in September 2013, well in advance before the Games kick off in November.
When prodded the personnel would not provide any further details without the approval or permission of their bosses.
The Sports Authority of Goa (SAG) staff was not present when this reporter visited the stadium as Monday being a holiday on account of the St Xavier’s Feast.
SAG Executive Director, Mr Elvis Gomes also could not be contacted as he is reportedly out of country. Sources disclosed that he has traveled to Europe in connection with the hosting of Lusofonia Games.
As such, The Navhind Times made it a point to contact the Assistant Engineer of the SAG, Mr Elvis D’Souza who said right now the demolition work at the North and East stands is complete and that demolition work at the South stand is on at the masonine level.
Asked what would be done after demolition work is over, Mr D’Souza disclosed that new rooms will be built and that the stadium structure would be strengthened.
He disclosed that within a week or near future a test known as the ‘NDT’ test (Non Destruction Test) will be conducted of the stadium’s structure. "Most probably this test will be done in a week’s time," Mr D’Souza said, adding: "The test will be conducted to asses the strength of the structure of the stadium."
A very important disclosure was also made by the engineer to a specific question when asked whether the I-League matches will be shifted elsewhere as the renovation work has already begun at Nehru stadium, Mr D’Souza said that this particular decision will have to be taken by the SAG, GFA and the government. He also hinted very strongly that the I-League will be completed in Margao at Nehru stadium itself. He also disclosed that the renovation work of the roofing of the stadium will also be taken up and that the stadium will surely have a ‘new look’ after all the work is completed.
Meawhile, the architectural staff of the M Venkatrao Infrastructure Project Limited disclosed that they will be involved in doing flooring work, tiling work, bathroom contruction, sanitary fittings, water proofing of the sitting platform, ground preparation, external landscaping, storm drain construction, parking of roads as well as of the parking facilities too.
