MARGAO: Raia SC lifted the 18th Muriel Faleiro memorial football trophy and took home a cash prize of Rs 30,000 after defeating strong contenders Verna SC 5-4 via the tie-breaker in the finals played at church grounds, Nuvem, Sunday. The runners-up, Verna had to be content with Rs 20,000.
Mr Aleixo Sequeira, former Power Minister was the chief guest. Both the teams dished out a very good brand of soccer with the ball moving from one end to the other all the while. During regulation time, the teams were locked in a goalless draw.
While Santano Rego and Richard Dias excelled for Verna, it was Raia goalkeeper Cosme Oliveira who had a great day today along with his colleagues Kevin Fernandes and Anthony Fernandes upfront.
Despite several tries, both the teams failed to find the mark during the normal period of play and as such the dead-lock had to be settled by adopting the tie-breaker in which Raia SC scored accurately through Joston Barbosa, Anthony Fernandes, Shwan Quadros, Gilbert Gomes and R Dias. Verna SC could score only through Richard Dias, Martin Abranches, Manuel Moniz and Myron Fernandes.
The following won the individual prizes: Best defender of the finals:Francis Vaz of Raia SC. Best half of the finals: Kevnin Vaz of Raia SC; Best forward of the finals: Richard Dias of Verna SC; Best goalkeeper of the finals: Franky Abranches of Verna SC and first scorer of the finals: Joston Barbosas of Raia SC.
