PANAJI: Progress High School, Sanquelim trounced Infant Jesus High School, Colva to win the Saraswat Vidyalaya High School-organised football tournament.
It was an easy win for Progress who scored eight goals while Infant Jesus managed to score only one goal. During the first half, Progress had scored two goals and were leading their rivals by one goal. In the second half they added six more goals while Infant Jesus could not add any more goals. Nigerian player of Progress High School, Chukwudi Chukwnma managed to steal the show with two goals which gave his team a wining edge over the Infant Jesus team.
The winners, Progress High School were awarded with a cash prize of Rs 4,100 while runners up received cash prize of Rs 3,100. Semi final losers —Don Bosco HS, Panaji and St Brito’s HS, Mapusa were awarded cash prize of Rs 1,100 each. The teams were also given a memento and a certificate.
The tournament was sponsored by Shri Ramnath Burye in memory of his late mother Neeta Narayan Naik Burye. In all eight school teams participated in the two-day tournament. Following individual prizes were also awarded: Best goalkeeper: Braganza Tristan of St Brito’s HS; Best defender: Dodfrey Mascarenhas of Mae de Pobres High School Nuvem. Best forward: Sunil Shetye of Infant Jesus HS Colva. Best half: Ivo Borges of Progress HS. Player of the tournament: Chukwudi Chukwama of Progress HS. Jayendra Nagvekar, Tejas Nagvekar and Eknath Salgaonkar were awarded as the best referees of the tournament.
