Today’s match was closely fought throughout with both the teams resorting to short passes which were pleasing to the eye. However, Cavelossim had a slight edge over their rivals and they showed their superiority by scoring on the opportunities that came their way and finally carried the day successfully.
Cavelossim were lucky to strike first in the opening session as a misunderstanding by Goa Velha defence helped a great deal for the Cavelossim striker Joaquim Carvalho to find the mark with keeper Siddesh Morje totally beaten by a deflection.
Goa Velha then began to spread the ball well on the flanks and tried hard to beat the strong Cavelossim defence.Their game began to show a much improved performance and a goal looked imminent at any time. But this good show lasted only for a while and then it was back to square one with Cavelossim getting into the rhythm and penetrating deep inside the rival territory.
The defence of both the teams stood firm even as both the teams produced a flurry of raids which had an element of danger written largely on them. Cavelossim’s tall and lanky goalkeeper Gurpreet Singh brought off some spectacular saves when Goa Velha were in the ascendancy.
Jolex Fernandes and Fredrick Endro had two shots at the rival goal in the first half of play and on both the occasions, Siddesh Morje came out in flying colours.
In the second session both the teams had a couple of chances and the goalkeepers had some busy time at both ends.
Cavelossim came up with a fine move when there were 22 minutes left for the final whistle and buttressed their lead. Playmaker Fredrick Endro set up a lovely pass to Jolex Fernandes who dribbled two rival defenders and sent an angular shot to beat Siddesh Morje guarding the Goa Velha goal.
Just three minutes before the final hooter, Goa Velha found a reducer as Nester Dias succeeded in sending the ball to the far corner of the nets giving no clue to keeper Gurpreet Singh.
