PANAJI: Penha de Franca Sports Club clinched the glittering Nerul Panchayat Cup, organised by Nerul Sports Club, with a hard fought 6-5 win via sudden death over strong contenders Sangolda Lightning Sports Club played at Nerul grounds.
It was Penha de Franca’s maiden entry into the finals of the inter-village tournament and the players did not disappoint their supporters as they kept their cool in the 70 minutes of duel and then won the match in the sudden death.
Sangolda were indeed a better side and had one attempt each at the rival goal in each session of play. Sadanand Mandrekar fierce shot hit the upright, while Yogesh Mayekar hot-blooded shot sailed inches over the Penha de Franca crosspiece.
Veteran midfielder Seby Rodrigues saw his shot at the goal being brilliantly saved by Sangolda keeper Washington Pereira.
With the match ending in a goalless draw, the tie-breaker was resorted to decide the winner and that went into the sudden death. For Penha de Franca Seby Rodrigues, Melwin Rodrigues, Dilip Rodrigues, Pandurang Halarnkar, Raju Padashi and Naved Almeida scored on target, while for Sangodla Lightning SC Washington Pereira, Yogesh Mayekar, Loyed Mascarenhas, Tome Alvares and Prashant Gaonkar scored.
GFA President, Mr Shrinivas V Dempo was the chief guest and handed over the winners trophy and cash prize of `25,000 to Penha de Franca team. Runners-up were given cash prize of Rs 20,000 and also a trophy.
Following individual prizes were awarded: First scorer of the finals: Seby Rodrigues (Penha); Best Defender: Frazier Picardo (Penha); Best Forward: Dilip Rodrigues (Penha); Best Goalkeeper: Washington Pereira (Sangolda); Player of the Tournament: Sachin Chopdekar (Sangolda); Upcoming Player: Rohit Naik and Player of the Year: Siddharth Shirodkar.
