MAPUSA: Curtorim Gymkhana made it to the quarters of the 1st all-Goa 9-a-side Reis Magos Panchayat Cup, organised by Verem Boys, with a hard fought 2-1 win over St Savio’s Sports Calangute in a group match played at Verem Panchayat grounds, here on Sunday.

In a thrilling match witnessed by a large Sunday crowd, both the sides played attacking soccer right from the start.

Curtorim silenced the vociferous Calangute supporters in the 7th minute of the first session when Sertorio Monteiro placed the ball into the rival nets off a square pass set up by Nickson Castana.

Cliff Fernandes of Calangute had a glorious chance to get the equaliser in the 23rd minute but unluckily shot straight into the waiting hands of the keeper.

On crossing over, Shervin Lobo dribbled past a couple of Curtorim defenders and on entering the danger zone also shot into the keepers hands.

While Calangute did the attacking, Curtorim further increased their lead through the individual efforts of Roy Albuquerque in the 50th minute of play.

In the dying minutes of the match, Shervin Lobo latched a power-pecked shot which was poorly collected by the Curtorim keeper, where opportunist Alber Gonsalves slotted the ball home making it 2-1.

FC Sanquelim, PVC Parra advance

Football Club of Sanquelim kept their slate clean to defeat Youth Club of Colvale by a 2-1 margin in the GFA’s Third Division League match played at Tivim Panchayat grounds, Tivim on Saturday.

With this win Sanquelim stand with six points while Colvale suffered their first defeat to remain on three points.

The teams were locked in a 1-1 draw at the breather. However, a smart solo effort by Philino Ratos saw Colvale take the lead in the 8th minute of play.

But it was Ismail Favanur who got the equaliser for Sanquelim in the 32nd minute.

When it seemed the teams were happy with a draw, Milind Rane scored the winning goal off a defensive error between the defender and the keeper.

At Anjuna grounds Tembi, PVC Parra managed to register a 1-0 win over St Sebastian SC Mapusa to earn full points.

In the 24th minute of the first session, Valentine Pereira receiving a cross from Valerino Lobo slammed the ball into the rival nets.

Nuvem pip Saligao Sporting

Nuvem Sports Club huffed and puffed to register a solitary goal win over Saligao Sporting club to enter the quarter-finals of the Mahabank Platinum Jubilee Trophy organised by Adarsh Yuvak Sangh Saligao and played at Calangute Association grounds on Sunday.

Both the teams played on equal footing in the first session of play.

Nuvem finally broke the deadlock in the 45th minute when Milagres Fernandes scored from a goalmouth melee. Stung by the reverse, Saligao went all out in search of the equaliser but failed to get past the stiff Nuvem defence.
