Nerul edge Navelim

PANAJI: Strong contenders from north, United Club of Nerul squeezed past crowd-pullers Navelim Sporting 11-10 via the sudden death to enter the quarter-finals of St Anthony’s Super soccer at Directorate of Sports grounds, Colva on Friday.

Both teams played a well calculated game, but play was mostly confined to the midfield as the deadlock prevailed at half time.
In the second half, both teams raided each other with great fervour with Nerul holding slight edge. A snap shot attempted by Navelim’s Milton was saved by Nerul keeper Henson D’Sa. Soon after, Nerul counter-attacked with John Vaz, who shot wide on an open goal with only Jonathan Faleiro of Navelim to beat. Again, Newton Pereira of Nerul shot tamely at the goalkeeper to miss a chance to surge ahead. With the stalemate prevailing, the tie-breaker was put to use and Nerul proved better shooters.
