Mohun Bagan face Lajong

KOLKATA: Things are not going according to plan for Mohun Bagan coach Satyajit Chatterjee.

The last year’s runners-up were unbeaten under the new coach who replaced Moroccan Karim Bencherifa and started his stint with a bang after thrashing Chirag United.

But after their humiliating 1-2 defeat against bottom-placed Sporting Clube de Goa in their last league match, Mohun Bagan’s chances to claim the title appear very slim as the shock result has put the Kolkata giants way behind leaders Dempo SC.

With nine more rounds left, the task is cut out and the green and maroon boys will have their best chance to come back to winning ways as they face Shillong Lajong FC in their home leg encounter at Salt Lake Stadium on Saturday.

In contrast to Mohun Bagan’s last match result, the Shillong outfit have won against Pune FC in the previous encounter. Coached by Stanley Rozario, a former East Bengal coach, Shillong Lajong are unbeaten from three matches but all of them have been home matches. The Shillong team, who are in the relegation zone with 17 points to be placed second last ahead of Sporting Clube de Goa, do not have a good record when it comes to playing away matches.

Airmen take on Mumbai FC

Meanwhile in the round 18 tie between Air India and Mumbai FC, it’s the airmen who are in a more dominating position than their city rivals after winning two matches on a trot under pressure with the relegation threat looming large over them.

Air India find themselves at ninth position in the points table with 21 points, while Mumbai FC are at the 11th position with 19 points. A win can change the placing and the Mumbai FC coach Khalid Jamil will surely try and take advantage of the home situation. But in comparison to Air India the Mumbai FC team haven’t been able to give their best shot in the home matches.
