Lajong sink to 2nd division

MAPUSA: Shillong Lajong’s stint in the ONGC I-League proved to be short-lived as the north-eastern side were dumped out of the league after their 1-3 loss to Salgaocar Sports Club at Duler grounds here Friday.

The loss spelled the doom for Stanley Rozario’s side who join Goan club Sporting Clube de Goa as the relegated teams.
Salgaocar owed the victory to their number two keeper Amit Nandi whose brilliant performance left the Lajong side frustrated. Nandi ensured that he gave a top class performance so that his side did not miss their regular keeper Kalyan Chaubey, who had to witness the match from the stands due to injury.
After several missed chances, in the 30th minute, Francis Fernandes beautifully set up Milagres Gonsalves who made no mistake to beat the keeper and guide the ball into the nets.The inclusion of Beevan D’Mello in the Salgaocar side spiced up their attack wherein he played a major role in helping Nigerian Ekene M Ikenwa, net in two quick goals. However, towards the fag end of the match, Lajong finally managed to get one goal to their credit through Gurung. Salgaocar keeper Amit Nandi was declared the man-of-the-match.
Mumbai avoid the axe: Mumbai F C coach Khalid Jamil was a relieved man on Friday after his boys registered a 2-0 win against Mohun Bagan in the final round of the I-league played at the Cooperage ground. Abhishek Yadav played his role of a skipper to the perfection and under pressure he scored two goals and was aptly awarded the man-of-the-match.
Abhishek Yadav scored off a penalty kick after Subhas Chakraborty was brought down by Ishfaq Ahmed inside the box as Mumbai FC drew first blood of the match in the 11th minute. The second goal by Yadav came in the 24th minute. Bashiru Abbas got the ball and essayed a shot which was cut off by Mohun Bagan goalkeeper Pralay Dutta but incoming Yadav was there to slot home off rebound.
