LUDHIANA: Hosts Jagatjit Cotton Textile Mills, Phagwara suffered their second successive defeat as they went down fighting to Oil and Natural Gas Corporation 2-1 in a Group C quarter-final league match in the 32nd Federation Cup at the Guru Nanak Stadium here today.
JCT had earlier lost to All India Football Federation XI by 1-0 while ONGC tasted their first triumph in two matches they have played here so far.
Both teams dished out good football. However, it was ONGC striker F Lalmuan Puia who tiled the balance in his team’s favour by scoring two goals. His first goal was the result of a solo effort as his powerful shot hit the pole before crossing the goalline with JCT goalkeeper Prasanta Dora remaining stranded at one place.
Down by one goal, the JCT players worked hard and their efforts bore fruits in the 76th minute. Getting possession of the ball from a pass from Jaswinder Singh, Ajay Singh caught the ONGC defence napping.
Five minutes later, ONGC went all out and snatched the match-winner with F Lalmuan Puia unleashing a full-blooded drive from top of the box.
