MARGAO: A double strike by Jaison Vales, one in the first half and the other in the added-on time of the second session, helped Churchill Brothers SC to carve out a 2-1 win over a spirited St Cruz Club of Cavelossim in the Kingfisher Professional League at Raia panchayat grounds, Tuesday.
Vales, a nippy striker, found the mark in the 37th minute to give his team the lead and then while Cavelossim had restored parity in between the match seemed heading for a draw. However, Vales scored the match-winner just when the fourth referee showed the add-on time of three minutes.
Earlier, Cavelossim who matched Churchill Bros well in all the departments of the game were content in finding the equaliser two minutes before the teams could go in for the break through their most trusted striker Agnelo D’Souza.
Both the teams saw two of their efforts hitting the frame work on either side of the break. Had these tries entered the nets, the script of the match could have been different, even as Churchill Bros were the ultimate winners today.
While Churchill drafted in Jeshua Rebello, Amritla Singh and Sabino Rodrigues as substitutes for Alesh Sawant, Sclachie Cardozo and Ajay Singh in that order to step up the pressure which seemed to have done a lot of good for the team, the Cavelossim lads did not lag behind in any respect and controlled the proceedings admirably throughout, except in the last three minutes of play when the defence fumbled to mark Jaison Vales who silenced the Cavelossim fans in the end.
Churchill made the first serious raid in the 24th minute of play when Ajay Singh let go a powerful shot from the top of the box, but the Cavelossim keeper Gurprit Singh rose to the occasion to bring a spectacular save.
Soon Xavier Kumar drove a fierce free-kick which once again was saved by the Cavelossim keeper. Cavelossim then retaliated through Wilton Gomes as he unleashed a hot shot which Churchill Brothers youthful keeper Melroy Fernandes responded with a smart save.
This move came off in the 28th minute of play.Very quickly thereafter Richard Colaco sent a powerful shot which was once again swallowed by the Churchill goalkeeper.
Churchill then attacked with more sting and took the lead when Jaison struck from inside the box, but his shot deflected off the keeper and came back to him again and this time, he beat the Cavelossim keeper by heading into the corner of the net.
With just two minutes left for the break, Cavelossim restored parity when substitute Monday Ugboji squared the ball to Agnelo D’Souza on the right flank and the last named unleashed a powerful shot to beat the Churchill keeper hands down.
The second session too was played on equal footing with both the teams trying to outwit each other, although nothing materialised until the added-on time of three minutes when Jaison Vales found the match winner to give full points to his team.
