Hosts Goa off to winning start

MARGAO: The 58th National School Games in Baseball and Tug-of-War for boys and girls U-19, organised by Directorate of Sports & Youth Affairs under aegis of the School Games Federation of India was officially declared open by Sports Minister, Mr Ramesh Tawadkar, Monday.

The inaugural ceremony was marked by a cultural performance by a cultural group from Curti, Ponda. The Police Band was in attendance at Sports Complex, Ponda. Mr Pandurang Dhavlikar, Minister for Cooperation, Mr Lavoo Mamledar, MLA (Ponda), Mr Jaipal Singh, SGFI Observer and Director of Sports (J&K), were amongst the dignitaries present on the occasion.

The Director of Sports & Youth Affairs, Mr V M Prabhudesai warmly welcomed the guests and the teams from the different States/UTs/Boards of the country.

Ms Juliana Gurjao e Colaco, Dy Director of Sports & Youth Affairs extended the vote of thanks.

Results: Baseball U-19 boys:Delhi beat Uttar Pradesh by 17:0 homes; Maharashtra beat Haryana by 7:0 homes; Andhra Pradesh beat CBSE by 12:2 homes; Madhya Pradesh beat Vidya Bharti by 11:1 homes; Punjab beat Chhattisgarh by 12:6 homes;Goa beat Uttar Pradesh by 15:0 homes. Baseball U-19 girls:Madhya Pradesh beat Maharashtra by 5:2 homes; Delhi beat Andhra Pradesh by 10:0 homes; Goa beat Haryana by 11:0 homes.

Tug of War U-19 (girls) Delhi beat Uttar Pradesh 3-0; Goa beat TN 3-0; AP beat Vidyabharti 3-0; Haryana beat Chhattisgarh 3-0. Boys: Delhi beat Vidyabharti 3-0;Punjab beat UP 3-0; Goa drew with Haryana (1-1); Gujarat beat CBSE 3-0;Tamil Nadu beat Dadra NH 3-0; AP beat Chhattisgarh 3-0.
