PANAJI: “It’s been a competitive week of football at the Federation Cup and Dempos have played hard to make it to the semi-finals,” stated I-League holder Dempo’s midfielder Godwin Franco on the eve of his team’s high-profile semi-final against defending champions Salgaocar at Siliguri.
“The entire team is confident of a favourable result, and if everything unfolds as per plan we should be in the finals. However, it will be a tough game as we expect Salgaocar to come hard at us,” Godwin told The Navhind Times on phone from Siliguri.
Personally, Godwin is happy with his personal performance and credits teamwork for his club’s passage into the last four. Though an injury scare has bothered the energetic medio ahead of the semis clash, Godwin says he is confident of recovering in time for Friday’s second semi-final.
“All I want is to see my team qualifying and winning the Federation Cup, which is a very prestigious event in the AIFF calendar,” Godwin noted.
Asked how’s the morale in the camp, especially after the team has had to shift base from Jamshedpur to Siliguri and adjust to the new venue for the knock-out phase, Godwin said: “The spirits are high within the team and everybody is raring to go against Salgaocar.”
Godwin said the ground at Siliguri seems a bit bumpy, but better than the one at Jamshedpur, where rain had rendered the pitch slushy, leaving players just to kick and run while playing their match.
