Goa Diocesan Priests win soccer finals

MARGAO: Goa Diocesan Priests soccer team overpowered Holy Spirit Parish Youth, Margao 5-1 to win the Priestly Vocation Promotion Exhibition match organised by Holy Spirit Parish Youth played at Holy Spirit Church grounds, Margao on Sunday evening.

Holy Spirit Parish Youth scored their sole goal of the match in the very first minute through Alison Fernandes.

In the third minute of the match, Goa Diocesan priest Fr Milagres Dias’ curling free-kick hit the cross and reverted back into play. However, Fr Jorge Fernandes found the equaliser for the Diocesan Priests in the sixth minute and thereafter striker Fr George Ratos scored to make it 2-1. Spirited Youth of Margao Parish with Hasten Fernandes, Hezlitt Fernandes and Ramson Pereira then tried several attempts to equalise but the strong defence and the vigilant goalkeeper Fr Benjamin Victoria thwarted the Youth moves. At half time the score was 2-1 in favour of Goa Diocesan Priests.

Immediately after changing ends, Goa Diocesan Priests scored two more goals through Fr George Dias and Fr George Ratos that demoralised the Youth spirit. Both teams were involved in counter moves and display of soccer skills.

Fr Caetano Fernandes gave a superb pass to Fr Christo Dias, whose neat placement beat the Youth team goalkeeper Anson Fernandes and travelled into the net, which sealed the score 5-1 in their favour.

Earlier in a girls friendly match, St Jose de Areal defeated Rosary College, Navelim.
