PANAJI: The Goa Football Association (GFA) at its executive meeting held at Duler, Wednesday, has proposed the name of president, Mr Shrinivas V Dempo to contest for the vice-president’s post from West Zone for the forthcoming elections of the All India Football Federation (AIFF) to be held in New Delhi on December 20.
The choice to propose Mr Dempo’s name at the GFA meeting seemed almost automatic as a majority of the executive members backed his candidature from the West Zone for the AIFF’s VP post.
It was known that members even gave the no objection to Mr Dempo to nominate anybody from west zone for the AIFF post and at GFA it was felt that Mr Dempo would be the right choice to contest for the vice president’s position.
There was consensus among those who backed Mr Dempo that he would be able to form an ideal link between Goa and AIFF considering his gigantic stature in Indian football as he also owns the country’s number one football club – Dempo Sports Club Pvt Ltd.
There is not even an iota of doubt that Mr Dempo has the best credentials to be the right candidate to represent AIFF as West Zone’s vice-president, a position which could prove highly influential in ensuring that Goan football in particular would benefit through his good offices and the kind of cordial rapport he shares with the top brass of AIFF. That apart, GFA has also backed AIFF president, Mr Praful Patel to retain his position at the helm. “Mr Patel has GFA’s backing,” disclosed a member after the GFA meeting at the Duler stadium premises on Wednesday afternoon.
Meanwhile, GFA vice president (north) Mr Lavinio Rebello along with executive members, Gajanand Kerkar, Babli Mandrekar, Lawrence Gomes, Schubert Furtado,Welwyn Menezes, Uday Lingudkar, Prakash Naik have also backed Mr Dempo for the AIFF VP post from West Zone, echoing strong support for the GFA chief.
As regards GFA-owned Duler stadium, it will be ready for inauguration on December 20 as the venue will be equipped with the new FIFA turf. To mark the inaugural, an exhibition match involving GFA XI (Executive Members) and Goa MLAs XI will be played on December 20.
