KOLKATA: Having crashed to five successive defeats, East Bengal will look to end their AFC Cup campaign on a winning note when they take on Lebanese outfit Al Nejmeh in their last Group D match on Tuesday.
Out of reckoning now, the Federation Cup champions had a miserable campaign so far and are yet to open their account.
Placed third on the standings with seven points, Al Nejmeh have an outside chance to make it to the pre-quarterfinals.
Second-placed Al Ittihad of Syria have bright chances with a goal difference of five compared to Al Nejmeh’s zero. The Syrian outfit will just need a draw to sail into the next round as they take on leaders Al Qadsia of Kuwait in their return-leg encounter on Tuesday. In their first-leg match, the Lebanese club had beaten East Bengal 3-0 and they will look for a similar performance on Tuesday.
However, the team did not have a happy memory of their last match, losing to Al Qadsia 1-3 that gave the Kuwait outfit the passage into the last 16.
East Bengal coach Philippe de Ridder had said earlier he was using this tournament as a learning ground for the youngsters.
A good performance will certainly boost the morale of the side in the I-League as they are languishing at the 12th spot out of 14 teams.
The Belgian coach had picked an inexperienced side in their last AFC Cup outing that they lost narrowly to Syrian powerhouse Al Ittihad 1-2.
Their star striker Bhaichung Bhutia is now fit after being down with a hamstring injury but it remains to be seen whether the senior-most pro takes the field with the likes of team captain Syed Rahim Nabi, Rennedy Singh, Mehrajuddin Wadoo and Abel Hammond who missed out the last AFC Cup match. On account of the Bharat bandh tomorrow, the match will start at 8.30pm.
