VASCO: The 41st National Taekwondo boys sports meet 2010 was inaugurated on Wednesday at Kendriya Vidyalaya-I at Varunapuri, Mangor Hill in Vasco.
The meet was opened by lighting the traditional lamp and invocation to goddess Saraswati, followed by a formal welcome by the Principal, Mr Velayudhan K P.
Dr Susana de Sousa, Director of Sports and Youth Affairs, was the chief guest for the inaugural function.
Senior Education officer of INS Hansa, Captain Senthil Kumar was the guest of honour while Goa Taekwondo Association, president, Mr Raju Mandrekar was the special invitee. This was followed by hoisting the Kendriya Vidyalaya flag and taking permission of the chief guest to begin the march past.
In all 18 teams from all over the country representing their regions marched to the rhythmic beat of the drum in salute to the chief guest followed by the oath taking ceremony.
The meet was formally declared open. Fire crackers sounded in the air and balloons in tri-colour adorned the sky. The sports torch signifying the meet open was lit.
The chief guest, Dr Susana in her message praised the organising committee and the children expressing her admiration. She stated that she had felt as though she was at the Commonwealth Games.
This was followed by a colourful cultural programme and vote of thanks by the Vice Principal, Ms Vinita da Gama Rose.
The afternoon session was spent in weighing the participants in order to categorise them into groups based on their weight and tie sheets of different weight categories.
