PANAJI: Derrick Menezes and Rajesh Choudhary consolidated their lead in the board sailing and laser radial championships on the second day of the National Laser and Board Sailing championships, here on Thursday.
In the first race of the day
in boardsailing, Derrick grabbed the lead at the windward mark closely followed by Donald and Remy. Donald, however, managed to overtake Derrick by the next mark with Remy close on their heels. Derrick, however, closed the gap on Donald and surged ahead in the last 100 metres to win the race seconds ahead of Donald.
Derrick also won the second race warding off the challenge from Remy and Donald. Remy beat Donald to come home second.
In the laser standards, Gajender Singh of AYN won both the races comfortably well ahead of his compatriot Harihara V while in the laser radials Rajesh Choudhary continued to prove his complete supremacy to win both races with a comfortable lead.
12-year-old Dwayne Coelho of Sharada Mandir School, who is the youngest participant in the boardsailing nationals and is sailing for the first time in the national championships, put up a creditable performance to finish fifth in both the races ahead of several other senior competitors. Zefra Currimboy won the first race in the laser 4.7 class followed by Hussain Bhavnagarwala and Rufus Nataniel. Aishwarya Chezhiyan took the second race in the category with Pravin Prabhakar and Hussain Bhavnagarwala coming in second and third, respectively.
