MARGAO: Spraying meticulous passes, Dempo Sports Club registered an easy 3-0 victory against Margao Sports Club in the GFA Kingfisher Professional football league match played at Nehru stadium, Fatorda-Margao on Monday.
Dempo SC led 1-0 at half time through a good goal scored by English recruit Rohan Ricketts in the 20th minute of play. In the second session they pumped in two more goals scored through Romeo Fernandes (56th minute) and Cliffton Gonsalves (63rd minute).
Dempo began well, resorting to swift short passes which was pleasing to the eye as their midfield functioned flawlessly throughout in which Aniston Fernandes in particular was the pick of the lot with his classic passes. The second goal that Dempo scored through Romeo Fernandes had all the neat work executed by Aniston when he fed Romeo with ease to score.
Dempo defence too stood tall manned by ever-confident Samir Naik and company and as such Margao could do nothing much to penetrate in the heavily guarded Dempo citadel.
No doubt, for the first few minutes of play, Margao did come up with some stray moves on the counter and during which time Sunford Cardozo and Gammy Costa were seen coming close in finding the mark. But their shots were either wide of the mark or saved by the young Dempo keeper Tyson Caiado who demonstrated a lot of maturity in his collection and positioning in the goal.
Dempo made the first serious move to find the mark in the 19th minute of play when Clifford moved on the flank and sent a back pass to Godwin Franco whose powerful shot kissed the horizontal and moved out creating a scare for the Margao keeper Bruno Colaco.
Soon came another great move for the Dempo team in the next minute which culminated into a goal.
Nickson Castana worked his way after dribbling two rival players and then sent a perfect pass to Rohan Ricketts whose low but none-too-powerful shot crashed to the far corner of the nets to the right of Margao keeper Bruno Colaco who dived a wee bit late.
Had the keeper dived in time, he might have been able to save the ball but that had not to be and thus Dempo went into the lead when the match was fought well on both the sides.
Dempo then began to dominate the proceedings and had the possession in their favour for long spells with Margao pulling all their resources and ability to find an equaliser but were unable to break the impregnable Dempo fort.
The second session began with a bang for the Dempo team and they scored within ten minutes to bolster their lead.
Tall and lanky midfielder Aniston Fernandes made a classic pass after eluding a couple of rival players following him and Romeo Fernandes had no difficulty in slotting the ball into the Margao nets.
Dempo then wove rings round the rival territory and quickly scored another goal and this time it came off following a smart pass from Romeo Fernandes to Cliffton Gonsalves who slammed the ball in from close.
Dempo then took it easy as the match wore on and whatever efforts Margao put in were not enough to create goal scoring moves.
Cliffton Gonsalves almost scored another goal for his team but the well taken shot hit the post off a Joy Ferrao’s flag kick.
