Dempo regain top spot

MAPUSA: Dempo Sports Club avenged their 2-0 loss in the first-leg to demolish Sesa Football Academy 5-2 and  secure the top place in the GFA Goa Pro-Super League match at Duler grounds, here on Sunday.

Both the sides started today’s encounter with 21 points in  their kitty.
Dempo played with two strikers Joy Ferrao and Cliffton Gonsalves with midfield being controlled by Godwin  along with Romeo Fernandes and two U-20 lads Aniston Fernandes, Nickson Castana.
Sesa Coach Clifford Chukwuma, surprisingly started Yogesh Kadam upfront and brought in Chukwudi Chukwuma in the last 30 minutes of the match, by which time the battle was already lost.
Sesa came with the first attack at the rival goal through Yogesh Kadam who broke the off side trap, but before he could pull the trigger, stopper back Selwyn Fernandes came with a timely clearance.
Both the keepers produced brilliant saves. In the 12th minute a hot-blooded strike from Godwin Franco was blocked by Sesa custodian Thockchom Singh and ten minutes later Yogesh Kadam’s 25-yard scorching right footer was tipped over the post by keeper Laxmikant Kattimani.
Dempo’s Romeo Fernandes collected a long ball from Aniston Fernandes on the right flank and managed to cut past the advancing Sesa keeper, but saw his aimless cross go in vain.
In the 35th minute, Dempo netted one of the easiest goal of the competition where right back Valerian Rebello sent a low cross that beat the Sesa defence including the keeper to find Joy Ferrao get his leg to the ball, 1-0.
A minute before the breather, Sesa had the best chance to level terms where Yogesh failed to connect Paresh’s cross right in front of the goal.
In the 8th minute of the second half, Dempo got their second goal from Joy Ferrao whose curling shot deceived Sesa keeper which hit the corner of the goalpost before entering the goal, 2-0. Dempo coach Mauricio Afonso brought in Nigerian Koko Sakibo, while Sesa coach Clifford Chukwuma came with two quick substitutions, in the last 30 minutes of the match through Sidharth Kundaikar and Nigerian Chukwudi Chukwuma.
Ponif Vaz’s defensive lapse saw substitute Nigerian Koko Sakibo set up unmarked Romeo Fernandes, who after covering some ground fired the ball past the helpless Sesa keeper for the third goal, 3-0.
Sesa though had a mountain to climb, yet did not lose hopes and pulled one up in the 66th minute through Ponif Vaz who tapped the ball off Chukwudi Chukwuma’s cross, 3-1. Dempo caught the Sesa defence napping where Sakibo set up Romeo on the right flank whose low cross was finished by Cliffton Gonsalves 4-1.
Sesa netted their second goal from a superb individual effort from Chukwudi Chukwuma, 4-2.
However a self goal by Felix Baretto saw Dempo further increase their lead to 5-2.
