PANAJI: Customs and Central Excise, Goa scored once in either session to record a 2-0 victory over Margao Veterans and enter the semi-finals of the 10th VM Salgaocar memorial veterans soccer tournament organised by Prime Sports Club at Nagoa ground.
Verissimo Rodrigues and Frankie Mascarenhas scored the goals for the winners, who started the proceedings well with Domnick Cabral and Verissimo Rodrigues controlling the
midfield.
Customs had the first real chance at goal in the 20th minute as striker Francis Dias put Domnick inside the box but Margao keeper Luis Fernandes brought off a fine save pushing away the stiff grounder.
But a minute later Margao conceded the first goal as midfielder Verissimo, who was unmarked on the edge of the box, receiving a Frankie pass placed the ball beyond the reach of Luis. After the restart, Customs immediately doubled their lead through Frankie who finished off a low cross by Daniel Noronha.
Despite being down by two goals, Margao Veterans gave a fight and would have even got a goal, but Customs keeper Chandrakant Naik brought out two tremendous saves to stop Alric Alvares and Peter Fernandes
from scoring.
Earlier, Mr Francisco Lume Pereira, football commentator and Mr Leslie D’Silva, the deputy commissioner of Customs and Central Excise were introduced to both the teams by secretary, Mr Boaventura Leitao.
