VASCO: After helping his team win the Indian Premier League in their third attempt on Sunday night, Chennai Super Kings left-arm spinner Shadab Jakati returned home on Monday.
The Goa Ranji mainstay said that the IPL has been a good preparation for India for the World Twenty20 and also showcased some exciting new domestic talent that had gone unnoticed so far. After impressing for Super Kings in the second season in South Africa last year, Jakati further enhanced his credentials with some fine performances and capped it with a match-winning effort on Sunday as he took the crucial wickets of Mumbai Indians captain Sachin Tendulkar and the dangerous Saurabh Tiwary while he also took a magnificent catch in the deep to dismiss JP Duminy.
The Vasco lad credited his success to his family and also acknowledged the support of his coach, fans, while he singled out his IPL captain MS Dhoni for special praise. “It feels really good,” was Jakati’s first reaction when he was contacted by ‘The Navhind Times’ on his arrival at
Dabolim airport.
He said beating Mumbai Indians headed by the little master Sachin Tendulkar in the finals was tough and scalping the master was a big moment while defending 169. “I wanted to bowl in the right areas and definitely felt taking wickets was possible. Tendulkar mistimed a chip and Vijay did the rest at long-off.”
Jakati also took the wicket of Tiwari in the same over which shifted the momentum in Chennai’s favour. The Vascoite also showed his athletic skills when he judged a catch in the deep as he balanced himself on the ropes for a fine hold to give his spin partner Muthiah Muralitharan
Duminy’s wicket.
“When I got a chance to perform, I never missed the opportunity and things have moved in my favour,” Jakati said. He said skipper Dhoni never put any pressure on him throughout the tournament and he deserved the glory.
Jakati was welcomed by his mother, Ms Abida Jakati, sister, Ms Sajida Sayyed, younger brother, Mr Sayyed Saif and Mr Afroz Saudagar besides a friend, Mr Azaruddin Khan at the airport. A visibly tired Jakati expressed his gratitude to the people of Goa and his fans for supporting him throughout the IPL and sending messages on his mobile for his success.
Interestingly, there was nobody from Goa Cricket Association (GCA) or other government agencies to receive the Goan hero who hopes to represent his country in
near future.
