Churchill tame Vasco, Salgaocar win

MARGAO: Churchill Brothers registered an emphatic 3-1 win against NRB Vasco in a wishy-washy match of the GFA Professional League match played at Nehru Stadium, here on Wednesday. In another match of the day, Salgaocar FC earned a solitary goal victory against a fighting Wilred Leisure SC at Raia Panchayat grounds.

In the action that happened at Nehru Stadium, Churchill Brothers were definitely a superior lot and scored all their three goals in the first half with NRB Vasco also managing their only goal in the first session.

Striker Ajay Singh scored two goals for Churchill finding the mark in 4th and 13th minute. The other goal scorer for the Varca-based team was Bineesh Balan who netted just three minutes before half time. NRB Vasco were level at 1-1 through Bittu Singh, who scored in the 12th minute.

Hardly had the cheers died down as Churchill went one up, when Ajay scored a gem of a goal to complete his brace. Churchill began in a meticulous manner resorting to short passes and spread the ball well on the flanks which completely put Vasco on the defensive for almost the entire first half of play.

Savio Colaso, Richard Costa, Amandeep Singh Bains and Ajay tore apart the Vasco defence often. They made their intentions known early when Amandeep moved deep inside the box and sent a smart pass on the run to Ajay, who had no difficulty in scoring in style.

Being unsettled by the goal, Vasco took around eight minutes to settle down and then suddenly took Churchill by surprise on a counter which caught their defence on the wrong foot as Bittu Singh bulged the nets after Agnelo Colaco did the spade work to feed him well to level the scores. But Vasco’s joy was short-lived as within the next one minute, Churchill scored again in a speedy move that gave Vasco keeper Rajini Kumar no chance as Ajay found the far corner of the nets off a pass from Satish Singh.

The match was than played on a rather slow pace with Vasco falling back to defend most of the time. Vasco did create some moves but the Churchill defence gave no room to the Vasco forwards to have a clear look at the goal.

Churchill Brothers than went in for the attack and scored their third goal two minutes before the break. Defender Gurtej Singh ran down the left flank and from an acute angle crossed the ball into the box to Bineesh, who tapped the ball over the Vasco keeper.

The second session was almost equally balanced as Vasco began to match their rivals well with good passes and created attacking moves too. However, once they came within the striking distance, they could not guide the ball accurately whenever they tried shots at the Churchill goal. Churchill made some dangerous moves too, but found no goal in the second half.

Meanwhile, in the match played at Raia Panchayat ground, Salgacoar FC had to sweat it out to register a 1-0 victory against Wilred Leisure. The only goal of the match was scored by Beevan D’Mello in the 70th minute off a flag kick taken by Brian Mascarenhas
