MAPUSA: Candolim Sports Club outplayed strong contenders Sangolda Lightning Sports Club by a thumping 3-0 margin, to enter the quarters of Calangute Panchayat Soccer Cup at Poriat grounds, on Wednesday.
It was an outstanding display from the Candolim lads, who stunned their opponents and the large crowd as they went into the breather leading by 2-0 margin. In the 14th minute Paul Cardozo worked up the right flank and sent a cross to a well positioned Sigmond Silveira inside the 18-yard box, who finished with a neat placement, 1-0. Had it not been for a fine save by Sangolda keeper Washington Pereira, Candolim’s Sigmond would have netted his brace. However, keeper Washington turned out to be a villain in the very next minute as his poor clearance was stopped by Bapu Pednekar, who directed his shot into the unguarded goal, 2-0. Candolim’s hunger for goals did not end, as they pumped in the third goal in the dying minutes of the match through Manuel Crasto, off a free-kick by medio Jolief Simoes, 3-0.
