MAPUSA: Candolim Sports Club registered a 5-3 win via tie-breaker over Adarsh Yuvak Sangh Sports Club Saligao, to move into the quarter-finals of Calangute Panchayat Cup, organised by Calangute Association, at Poriat grounds, here on Tuesday. The teams were locked in a 1-1 draw after the end of regulation time.
Saligao forged ahead in the 7th minute of play through their striker Paresh Morje, who smartly chipped the ball over the advancing keeper Bharat Morje.
Kliber D’Souza controlled a fine square pass from his teammate Roy Das in the 15th minute, to level terms for Candolim.
Paresh Morje failed miserably to connect a low cross from Mauvin Britto, to beat helpless looking keeper Bharat Morje, five minutes before the breather.
On crossing over, Candolim defender Shankar Palyekar came up with a timely clearance in the 8th minute, to deny Mauvin Britto from scoring.
At the other end, a well executed free-kick by Kliber D’Souza luckily brushed keeper Lawrence Trinade’s hands, before hitting the upright.
Ten minutes before the final hooter, Weslau Rebello was late to finish the rebound off the Saligao keeper, from a hot-blooded strike by Roy Das.
In the penalty shootout, Shankar Palyekar, Murren, Kliber D’Souza and Joelf Simoes, scored on target for Candolim, while for Adarsh YS only Francis Fernandes and Ritesh shot on target.
