MARGAO: St Anthony’s Club, Colva registered a hard fought 4-3 tie-breaker victory over Maina SC to enter the quarter-finals of Cana-Benaulim Soccer tournament, organised by Cana-Benaulim SA and played at St John Baptist grounds, Dando, Benaulim.
The tie-breaker had to be applied as both the teams failed to score in the regulation period. Maina had to blame themselves for the defeat as their strikers blew away decent chances in the second session. For Colva, midfielder Nelson Gomes tried hard to put up the flow of passes but striker Joston Pereira was effectively marked by rival stopper Roque Carneiro.
Colva defenders John Baretto and Clyde Pacheco also had a fine match not giving much away to Maina’s Jessel Carneiro and Mackroy Piexoto. In the closing stages, referee Joaquim Manuel sent off Maina defender Reo Mascarenhas for abusive language. In the tie-breaker, St Anthony’s were successful through Nelson Gomes, Clyde Pacheco, Dulio Andrade and Clifford Fernandes while Roque Carneiro, Mackroy Piexoto and John Fernandes were on target for the losers.
