MARGAO: Hosts Cana-Benaulim Sporting Association recorded a hard-fought 3-2 tie-breaker victory over Goa Velha Sports Club to enter the quarter finals of Cana -Benaulim Soccer tournament being played at St John Baptist grounds, Dando -Benaulim on Saturday.
With the heavy downpour making the ground slushy both the teams struggled to keep the ball moving. Benaulim’s experienced medios Alfred Fernandes and Carlos Fernandes did produce the occasional defence-splitting pass but striker Rody Fernandes and Ossie Fernandes were a wasteful lot.
On the other side, Goa Velha were tight in their defence where Stanley Fernandes and goalkeeper Valerio were very impressive. Midfielder Joyner and Reagan also worked hard but were unable to find the way past the rival defence. To break the stalemate, the tie-breaker was applied in which Santan Fernandes, Alfred Fernandes and Xamaro Rodrigues were successful for the hosts but only Vishant Pednekar and Joy Gonsalves were on target for Goa Velha.
