MAPUSA: Cana Benaulim advanced into the semi-finals of 1st all-Goa 9-a-side Reis Magos Panchayat Cup, organised by Verem Boys, with a 7-6 win via tie-breaker over Candolim Sports Club, at Verem Panchayat grounds, on Monday.
In a fast-paced encounter between the Bardez and Salcete side, the large crowd were on their feet, till the end of the penalty shootout, as the 70 minutes of duel had ended in a 1-1 draw.
Benaulim’s Santana Fernandes could not believe to find his shot from just outside the 6-yard, in the very 2nd minute, being superbly saved by former Salgaoncar keeper Bharat Morje.
However in the 18th minute, the keeper could do very little to stop a curling free kick by Laxmikant Kurade from entering the far corner of the goal.
It looked like the Benaulim side were content with the one-goal lead, while the Candolim outfit built pressure and were finally rewarded in the dying minutes of the match.
Jolief Simoes brilliantly connected Patrick Gonsalves’ long throw-in by a firm header to make it, 1-1.
In the tie-breaker, Santana Fernandes, Paulin D’Silva, Stevenson Fernandes, Rody Fernandes, Nelson Fernandes, and Laxmikant Kurade shot on target for Benaulim, while Shankar Palyekar, Stanley D’Silva, Jolief Simoes, Rody Fernandes and Jose Lopes scored for Candolim. Roy Das’ penalty hit the Benaulim upright.
