MARGAO: Ambelim Sports Club scored in both the halves to record a comfortable 2-0 victory over Sporting Club Davorlim to enter the quarter-finals of Fraxier trophy soccer, organised by Young Strikers Club, Benaulim and played at St John Baptist grounds, Dando-Benaulim.
Davorlim were the favourites to go through but Ambelim surprised the decent gathering with their enterprising display. Ambelim midfielders Clayton Silva and Tiburcio Fernandes were in control of the proceedings and the winners deservedly went ahead in the 17th minute when winger Primson Fernandes’ low cross was meet with a deft touch by striker Maxwin Fernandes but Davorlim keeper Joaquim Orkay blocked the shot. However, Maxin immediately shot in the rebound before rival defender Wilson Miranda could react on the goalline. Before the change of ends, Ambelim keeper Benny D’Silva did well to stop a fierce free-kick by Agnelo Gomes to keep the lead.
Davorlim increased the pace but Ambelim defenders Joseph Pinto and Mauricio Fernandes kept the dangerous rival strikers William Niasso and Venson Figueiredo under control.
Midway through the second session, Ambelim doubled their advantage when the speedy striker Samson Fernandes latched on to a Clayton through pass and after entering the box, struck a right footer.
which got deflected off Davorlim stopper Vincent Colaco and went into the net.
