2nd Sesa Soccer Cup: Marshal gives Sporting Clube win

MAPUSA: Three excellent saves in the penalty shootout by keeper Marshal Fernandes enabled Sporting Clube de Goa register a 4-2 win via tie-breaker over St Cruz Club Cavelossim, in the inaugural match of the 2nd Sesa Soccer Cup U-20 football tournament, organized by Sesa Football Academy, at SFA grounds Sirsaim, on Saturday.

The second edition of the U-20 tournament was kicked off by GFA Vice President Mr Lavinio Rebello, in the presence of Dr N N Bhatikar-SFA Advisor, Mr Brahmanad Shankwalkar, Mr Melwin Menzes,GFA member and other officials.

Sporting started as favourites but as the match progressed they found the going tough against the underdogs Cavelossim.

It was outstanding goal keeping by Cavelossim keeper Alfroy Rodrigues, who time and again came to his team’s rescue to deny Alber Gonsalves, Charles Cardoz, Pritam Ningthoujam and Xavier Dias of Sporting from scoring.

Sporting also received a jolt in the 36th minute of the first session, as defender Frazier Rogtao was red-carded by referee Prasad Surlekar, for deliberately stamping Cavelossim’s Edgar Fernandes, and Sporting had to play the remaining part of the match with ten players.

However in the 68th minute Sporting’s Pritam Ningthoujam put his team ahead, scoring from the penalty spot, after Klinnsman Pereira had handled the ball inside the danger zone, 1-0.

When it looked that Sporting were content with the one- goal lead, Cavelossim coach changed his strategies and sent a couple of players upfront in search of the equalizer, and it paid dividends, as their team skipper Micheal D’Silva was carelessly brought down inside the penalty box, by Mario Fernandes, in the 81st minute, giving no option for the referee to point to the dreaded spot. Michaal D’Silva made no mistake to score, 1-1.

In the ensuing tie-breaker, Sporting keeper Marshal Fernandes who was not seriously tested in the match, came out with flying colours in the penalty shoot-out to save Michael D’Silva, Klinnsman Pereira and Valerio Fernandes’ strikes. For Sporting, Xavier Dias, Alber Gonsalves and Charles Cardoz scored in the tie-breaker, while for Cavelossim only Niali Cardoz found the mark. Nickson Castana of Sporting received the man-of-the-match award.
