Sporting hold Salgaocar to 1-1 draw

FC Goa to open campaign against ChennaiMAPUSA: Sporting Clube de Goa held Salgaocar Football Club to a 1-1 draw in the GFA’s Professional League match played at Duler stadium, here on Tuesday.
Barring a couple of U-20 players, both the teams fielded a string of I-League players.
Salgaocar lost a glorious chance to take the lead in the very 5th minute when a curling corner by Thangjam Singh found Augustine Fernandes who however failed to score from a goalmouth melee.
Sporting’s Beevan D’Mello close range shot was blocked by Salgaocar custodian Karanjit Singh, but Mauvin Borges blasted wide off the rebound.
Finally in the 42nd minute, a defensive clearance by Spanish Pablo Zurera was intercepted by Pune FC signing Douhousey Pierre and he finished with a superb 25-yard blistering shot which crashed into the far corner of the goal, 1-0.
Three minutes into the second session and Mauvin Borges was tackled by Salgaocar defender Pawan Kumar inside the danger zone, which was initially over-ruled by referee Maria Rebello. However following the strong protest by Sporting players, Maria consulted her assistance and pointed to the penalty spot.
Salgaocar ever-agile goalkeeper Karanjit Singh came with a full stretched diving save to push the ball for a corner to deny Anto Xavier from getting the equaliser.
Once again the custodian came to his team rescue, as he moved backwards to tip the ball for a corner off a long shot by Chandrashekhar Chinta.
In a quick counter attack Pierre intelligently sent a pass to overlapping Gilbert Oliveira on the right flank, who darted inside the 18-yard box but instead of taking a crack at the goal crossed to Domnic Soares to find Sumit Ghosh clear the ball for a corner.
Sporting coach Oscar Bruzon’s move to bring in Victorino Fernandes paid dividend as a costly defensive error by Pawan Kumar whose attempt to give a back pass to the keeper was intercepted by opportunist striker Victorino and toed the ball into the goal to draw level.
Salgaocar FC 1 (Djidja Pierre Douhou Sey 43’) 1 Sporting Clube de Goa (Victorino Fernandes 68’)
