MARGAO: Striker Boima Karpeh’s brilliant brace and a goal from Anthony Wolfe helped Sporting Clube de Goa start their campaign in the 127th edition of the prestigious Durand Cup on a promising note when they scored a hard-fought 3-2 win against Kolkota outfit United SC to collect full points in an exciting league match played at Raia grounds on Wednesday.
Boima Karpeh scored in the 2nd and 6th minute of play, while Anthony Wolfe found the mark from the penalty spot in the 63rd minute. United SC who matched Sporting Clube de Goa well in all the departments of the game, pulled two goals back in the 28th and 70th minute through Sankar Oraon and Sujay Oraon respectively.
Sporting Clube de Goa stunned the well-known Kolkata team in the very second minute of play when Boima Karpeh controlled well a pass off a freekick taken by Rowlin Borges and then after taking two steps forward unleashed a power-packed effort, allowing no chance for United SC keeper Ranajit Majumder to react.
Goaded by this early success, Sporting Club de Goa then began to control the proceedings well to their advantage for most part of the first session with United SC team falling back to defend. The defensive approach adopted by the United SC team did not serve them any better as Sporting Clube de Goa continued pressuring in search of a lead.
Launching the attacks from both flanks, Sporting Club de Goa were seen all over the rival territory and very quickly scored another goal once again through Boima Karpeh. Moving down quickly with the ball even as two rival defenders on his trail, Mauvin Borges saw Boima Karpeh absolutely unmarked and passed the ball to him. The last named wasted no time in banging the ball to the far corner of the nets to score his brace for the day.
The ball then began to swing from one end to the other and United SC were seen making valiant attempts in search of a goal. Their hard efforts paid rich dividends when Sankar Oraon let go in a rocket-like volley to the far end of the Sporting Club de Goa nets, taking keeper Kamaljit Singh completely by surprise.
In the second session, Sporting Club de Goa had better possession of the ball and dominated most of the proceedings of play. Anthony Wolfe who moved deep inside the box was brought down in the process of aiming at the goal. Referee Maria Joseph pointed to the penalty spot from where Anthony Wolfe converted without any difficulty.
United SC retaliated and produced some dangerous moves one of which was converted into a goal in the 70th minute when defender Sujay Oraon who had moved up found the nets. United SC then made some attempts to force a draw but try as they would they could not find the mark.
