Sporting Clube squeeze past Churchill Brothers in 5-goal duel

A hat-trick by captain Marcus Fernandes helped Sporting Clube de Goa to come back from behind and register a stunning 3-2 win against Churchill Brothers FC in the GFA Professional Football League match at panchayat grounds, Nagoa on Thursday.

The swift footed, slim Sporting Clube de Goa captain Marcus Fernandes found the mark in the 72nd, 83rd and 90th minute to complete his hat-trick and earn valuable three points for his team. Churchill Brothers striker from Trinidade and Tobago, who is also the captain found the mark in the 31st and 77th minute. With this win, Sporting Clube de Goa has collected 14 points from six matches while Churchill Brothers FC is on 13 points also from six matches.

Churchill Brothers FC went into the lead following a flag kick which was nicely floated by medio Israil Guring to Willis Plaza who leaped high into the box on the left flank to send the ball to the far corner of Sporting Clube de Goa nets.

Marcus Macarenhas gentle tap rolled to the far corner of Churchill Brothers FC nets to beat the not so confident looking keeper Md Jafar Modal in the 72nd minute. Churchill Brothers FC once again surged into the lead through a penalty kick after substitute striker Clencio Pinto was brought down inside the box by Peter Carvalho with the referee pointing to the dread spot from where Willis Plaza banged the ball in.

Sporting Clube de Goa fought well with all their sting and restored parity in the 83rd minute when defender George D’Souza sent a smart flag kick which was taken full advantage by Marcus whose angular header landed to the far corner of Churchll Brothers FC nets (2-2).

But the show was not over as Sporting Club de Goa came up with a match winner in the 90th minute of play when Peter Carvalho –who had a major role in this match– floated the ball to Marcus Mascarenhas who was in the right spot to head the ball in to stun Churchill Brothers F C and snatch a win. Both the teams seemed to be playing on level footing even though the fifteen minutes of clearly belonged to Sporting Clube de Goa who could have taken the lead in the very 3rd minute of play had the flag kick taken by Lloyd Mascarenhas been utilised by Nigerian striker Chukwuenmeka Philip whose header sailed over the bar giving, giving a real scare to the Churchill Brothers FC keeper.
