Margao: The sewerage treatment at Sirvodem is under the scanner after large quantities of untreated sewage was found in the storm water drain leading to river Sal even as the officials failed to provide a satisfactory reply to the source of the sewage in the storm water drain.
Navelim panchayat now wants a joint inspection with officials from PWD, sewerage corporation health department to address the issue as the contractor failed to provide the source and later blamed neighbouring housing colonies of discharging their sewage into the drains of the sewage treatment plant.
Panch member Adelina Fernandes said that there are complaints from Sinquetim residents of unbearable stench emitted especially at night when the untreated sewage is discharged directly into the river. She said the smell is unbearable and upon inspection untreated sewage was found in the storm water drain which perhaps explains the hardships faced by the people.
The sarpanch Vilma D’Silva expressing concern over the untreated sewage said the panchayat has been asked to carry out a survey on the source of release of sewage into the river following directions from the National Green Tribunal, however it is a matter of great concern as untreated sewage has been found in the storm water drains and the government should look into the matter seriously.
Meanwhile, there were chaos during the inspection after health officials from the Navelim primary health centre refused to continue the inspection stating that despite the sewage treatment plant being within the jurisdiction of Navelim panchayat it was under the urban health centre and officials from urban health centre have to be present for the site inspection.
