Sesa FA break Sporting Clube’s unbeaten run

Sirsaim: Sporting Clube de Goa suffered a dent in the title race as they suffered a narrow 1-0 defeat at the hands of Sesa Football Academy (SFA) in the Goa Professional League match, played at Sesa Academy Ground, Sirsaim, on Tuesday. Domnic Soares scored the all-important goal for SFA.

Alton Vaz was the only change in the Sporting side which had defeated FC Goa in the last match, whereas Sesa FA who defeated Velsao SCC in the previous encounter had three changes to their side as keeper Sapam Singh, Mark Barreto and Shridharnath Gawas were back in the lineup.

After series of attacks, Sporting came close to scoring in the13th minute when Marcus Mascarenhas made a low cross to Philip Odogwu in the box but the Nigerian striker was unlucky as his strike rebounded off the goalpost.

A few minutes later, they once again came close to take the lead as this time George Fernandes sent a deadly cross in the box but Sesa keeper Sapam came off his line to clear the danger on time.

At the other end, the Sesa lads took 25 minutes to create their first potent chance of the match as Shajam P, after receiving a short pass from his teammate Mark, went for glory from the top of the box but Sporting custodian Melroy Fernandes dived full length to push the goal bound shot for a corner.

Sporting had few more opportunities to take the lead but some aimless shots by Philip, Marcus and Peter Carvalho restricted the score line to goalless at the lemon break.

The first 25 minutes of the second half saw the Flaming Oranje come up with numerous raids on the rival but, like in the first session, Philip and Marcus failed to keep their strikes on target. Whereas, substitute striker Akeraj Martin who replaced U-20 Dattaraj Gaonkar also failed to capitalise on few occasions.

At the other end, the Academy Boys stunned the rivals as they took the lead in the 71st minute when Domnic Soares’ long ranger crashed into the net making it 1-0 for his side.

In the dying minutes of the match, Sporting had the best chance to level back when Stendly Fernandes sent a perfect cross to Marcus in the box but the forward headed over the crossbar from the goal mouth.
