A lecture on ‘Social Networking- A Boon or Bane’ was organised as part of the Golden jubilee celebrations of the fdepartment of computer engineering at Goa College of Engineering (GEC), Farmagudi.
The talk was delivered by cyber security expert and cyber crime investigator, Harold D’Costa who is the director of Pune-based Intelligent Quotient Security System.
D’Costa spoke on various types of social networking crimes and highlighted several real life incidents wherein individuals were victims of various types of cyber crimes like social engineering, cyber bullying, identity theft, phishing scams, malware attacks, objectionable content, overexposure and contact with predators.
He explained how the information like pictures, videos and comments and updates posted on social networking can be used to spread false rumors, threaten to reveal the information on the internet, blackmail and stalk the user. Harold also provided various suggestions on how to stay safe on social networking sites.
