Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar, replying to a Zero Hour Mention in the state legislative assembly on Friday said that based on reports received from the intelligence agencies of the Union Ministry of Home Affairs, he acted immediately and provided police protection to noted Goan writer Damodar Mauzo.
It may be recalled that the related lead to the intelligence agencies came from the interrogation of the alleged killers arrested for the 2017 murder of Gauri Lankesh, in Bengaluru.
Parrikar, who holds the Home portfolio, told the House that the interrogation of those detained by the police in connection with the murder of Gauri Lankesh came out with some names (on the target), including one from Goa that of Mauzo. “We acted immediately and provided him with the security cover,” he added.
Earlier, Congress MLA Aleixo Reginaldo Lourenco, who tabled the Calling Attention Motion, alleged that those booked in the murder of Lankesh have links with Sanatan Saunstha, a religious organisation having its headquarters in Goa. “We have to investigate all the incidents in which this organisation has been involved right from the Margao blast on the eve of Diwali, some years ago,” he demanded, adding that a wrong trend has started in Goa, and the state needs no terrorists here.
Mauzo is a progressive thinker and writer and winner of Sahitya Akademi award.
Meanwhile, sources informed that as a precautionary measure one personal security officer (PSO) has been provided to Mauzo and that all precautions will be taken if he is going out of the state wherein the police in that particular area (outside Goa) will be informed.
According to information, the matter pertaining to the issue was communicated to Goa police by the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) asking it to take precautionary measures. Sources informed that the threat perception will be assessed from time to time.
