The Konkani stage is going great with the introduction of some talented performers, who have been receiving outpouring love from the audience. Scully D’Souza, from Sangolda is one such talented artist. With a God given voice, she keeps the audience in raptures.
Encouraged by her parents, Jose Timotio and Silvana D’Souza and her grandparents, Cassiano and Bela Dias, the young lady gives credit to her family for what she has achieved so far. Her father loved Konkani music as much as he loved ‘tiatr’ and taught his daughter to sing in Konkani from a very young age. Scully is based in Muscat, Oman as both her parents work there. Her father was a banker and her mother is a teacher in an International school. After completing schooling at the Indian School, Muscat, she went on to pursue a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration specialising in marketing and finance. She plays the piano, and has graduated through the Associated Boards of Royal School of Music, London. At present she is pursuing a chartered accountancy course and works in Muscat at the London Training Institute.
She bagged the first place at the ‘Muscat Talent Hunt 2013’. In 2014 at the ‘Goencho Avaz’ competition, she was declared the first runner-up. This gave her the confidence to perform and sing on stage. She was invited to perform at various musical shows and programmes and this brought her closer to the Goan audience. Now she performs in Muscat and Goa, and also sings for a band named C2R in Muscat. She has performed with Lorna in 2016, “a dream come true,” she says. She has also performed at the musical show ‘Kor Kantar 2017’ in Taleigao. Prince Jacob and Ben Evangelisto, two stalwarts of the Konkani stage performed alongside Scully. Norman Cardozo is the band leader who gives her the required boost. She feels that she has more confidence when Norman and his band give her backing when she sings. In 2015, Scully was crowned ‘Miss Teen India 2015’, in Delhi, from among thousands of participants. She also walks the ramp for a number of fashion shows.
Scully made her debut on the Konkani stage in the latest hit, ‘Tujem Bhangar, Tujeach Angar’, Mariano Fernandes’ new tiatr. She renders three songs in this show. The first song titled ‘Goa’ has lyrics written by her father, set to music by Norman. Her entry on the ‘tiatr’ stage has made her known to even more lovers of Konkani music and she is happy with the support and teamwork from the co-actors. Her father always encouraged her to sing, and asked her to never stop. Today as she renders his song, she pays tribute to her departed father, and is sure that he is proud of her.
‘Goa’, happens to be her signature song, wherever she performs. Scully wanted to give up singing after the death of her father, but somehow decided to continue and today rocks the audience with her voice and singing style. She comes to Goa from Muscat every two years for a long vacation and takes up performances whenever there are shows, as she loves to perform in Goa.
Scully has plans to continue singing in Konkani and says that she owes it to her father! A new album from Bryan Fernandes featuring top singers of Goa alongside others will be released this month. In the meanwhile she continues to enthrall the audience in this ‘tiatr’.
